4 guys head for the Arctic Circle while Harry is stuck behind in Fairbanks with his Harley in the shop!
Harry is taking these pictures with tears in his eye at about 8:00 a.m. Then he grabbed another hour of sleep! John is our West va. dirt road specialist so he is primed for this ride. Hope he doesn't have to put more plugs in that back tire!
So here it is, proof that Richard & his Ultra made it to the arctic circle.
Proof that the 4 musketeers were at the Arctic Circle together. (Kenny turned around when the pavement stopped and spent the day in Fairbanks, not as dumb as the rest of us!)
Wait a minute, how did Harry get to the Arctic Circle? Would you believe this: Picked up bike 10:30, left Fairbanks 11:00am, took a 33 mile detour by mistake, rode the Dalton Highway at Warp Speed, arrived at Arctic circle at 2:45, right behind the 3 sight-seeing riders!
And Bill and his Ultra are right there as well.
John only had problems with his slick tires on the muddy spots (they wet the road for dust control at times!)
Harry says "I'll have some in a glass with Scotch please!"
John & Richard relax near Finger Rock (not shown)
Bill says I'll take some of this snow wrapped around a BUD please! Doug Gillette and Gary the Spruce Grouse who has adopted Doug (not vice versa!)
Looking through the kitchen (where Doug fixed me a mooseburger) into the bedroom.
Looking from the kitchen back to the inside shop area
Doug & Gary in front of the "house that Doug Built!"
A view of one of the outbuildings, Doug built it all and it is still in progress!
The premier product of Doug's Wood Goods: a beautiful swingout spice rack. Some CD racks & spice racks. Doug had no inventory of finished goods at the time because of a great trip to San Diego (reunion with other Peace Corps volunteers).
The outside wood shop. Doug ages birch, rough saws with a chain saw, coarse planes with a power planer, but then hand planes the final wood to incredible smoothness in this soft wood! Another angle on the house which Doug calls a 5 tree, treehouse.
Don't miss the turn into Doug's place or you end up on this road like Harry did. I rode it all the way to the end, and 3/4 of the way back before I slipped into a deep rut and got stuck.
Bicycle parking
Wish I'd taken a picture of the bike with both wheels down in a rut and the bike standing up straight held by the exhaust & saddlebags! I had other things on my mind! It took 3 of us to lift out the front end, then the back.
Another picture of my gracious host serving up a cold one for a dusty road warrior travler!
